Default Inside the Secret World of Gamestop Dumpster Diving

Hey, free games!

For those of us who have cast away the shame of scouring through bags of trash – colloquially known as dumpster diving – there are potential treasures aplenty.

And if you’re a gamer, Gamestop dumpsters can be a gold mine.

Video games, working controllers, strategy guides, store displays: all can be found strewn among the debris, ready to be snatched up by anybody willing to dive into a (moderately dirty) refuse bin.

Bookstores are a good place to dumpster dive too. I spent many years working in bookstores. Books were thrown away by the box load (publishers give credit for unsold paperbacks). Magazines are stripped of the front cover and thrown away. We would always find the adult magazines thrown on the ground the day after we trashed them. People had to be going through the trash everyday just to see if any smut had been thrown away. Why they didn't take them or put them back in the dumpster is beyond me. We would use tongs or a broom and dust pan to pick them up. You never knew if there was going to be DNA on it. Funny that we could have 15 boxes full of books that wouldn't be touched, but they would always get the smut. I always wanted to put a sign on the dumpster that said "If you are going to take some smut, you must also take a book to read."

I have every paperback of Stephen kings before 2000. None of them have front covers. Girl I knew worked at a book store gave all of them to me for free and sent covers in for credit
