If we step back and take the emotion out of this (OH NO! MY CFB IS GOING AWAY!) then we must look at the fact that college athletes currently receive compensation (scholarships) in return for services rendered. This is different than typical students who receive a scholarship simply for meeting qualifications. Sure, if they don't go to class they can lose the scholarship, but that's only because they no longer qualify (GPA drops below a threshold).

So since college athletes receive compensation for services rendered, they must be considered employees, thus giving them the same right as any employee.
If an athlete doesn't keep his grades up he loses his scholarship too. Academic and athletic scholarships are not the same, but neither are compensation for services rendered (The IRS specifically says any monetary compensation for services rendered has to be included as income.) They are considered charitable gifts with conditions. The conditions are just different for the different kind of scholarship gift. And academic requires a higher academic standard than an athletic one but and athletic scholarship has an academic and athletic component.

Just wait. Sooner or later you will see players in a Union that don't like something and threaten to strike (i.e. not play the next football game or games until they get what they want, up to removing the Head Coach).

Also, if you have to pay one player of one sport, you eventually will have to play players of all sports and it won't matter if their sports make no money. If they train and do all other things to compete in their sport, then they deserve to be paid. There will be lawsuits on that, too. If you are members of a union in one sport, there will be union members in all sports. If some sports pay their players and some don't, you know several nonpaying sports teams will strike until they get paid. Watch what happens if those striking members get kicked off the team. You are infringing on their rights. Will it come to be that you can't play college sports in some states unless you are a member? Possible.

That means many schools across the nation, not only NW, will start shutting down sports and the first one will likely be football because of the number of scholarships involved and Title IX. Once that is done, many other sports will be shut down, too, because why pay a kid to play a sport if few watch it and it doesn't pay for itself? If you are lucky, we might have men's and women's basketball left and little else. Forget travelling out of the region to play and welcome back long bus rides that we might fly to today. You think our former AD was tight with money? You ain't seen nothing, yet.

Donations to the school will drop sharply as those who rooted for the school, but never attended, will have little reason to continue to give money in harsh economic times for the thing they enjoyed watching, college sports.

Forget all those contracts from ESPN, CBS, SECNetworks, etc. They aren't going to pay big bucks for watered down sports and many games will not be broadcast across the nation.

The NFL will have to create a farm system instead , which will be great for all the kids who care little for academics, and the college teams who will still make a profit enough to field a football team will soon resemble what your grandfathers saw play. On the plus side, there should be lots more tickets.

This is a very dark day for college sports. Greed. It'll get you every time. All these things may not happen at every school, but many will happen at many schools.

There are a lot of assumptions in this post.

Also you seem to be OK with greed in the sport- just so long as it isn't the player (you know, the one putting their health at risk) the one being "greedy"

Those who say it will end college sports are defeatist losers. They don't realize it will CHANGE college sports, but will not end them. How it will change them is yet to be seen. Some want to assume the worst. So be it.

Exactly. Can't demand compensation that isn't there.

People are trying to construct strawmen arguments to satisfy their emotional responses to this news. They're not divesting themselves and being objective.

How is anyone supposed to know that? That is not what this ruling is about. The results of this ruling are yet to be determined.

Theoretically, once public schools have players unionize, they can collectively bargain with tier employer. So, theoretically- yes. Schools with more money will be able to provide better compensation. But that is still yet to be determined.

What the players get now is pretty good for their efforts right now.

Paid tuition and the opportunity for a great education (it is up to the individual to take advantage of it). Room and board paid for, too, which would cost plenty on their own. Many get Pell grants, more money.

World class nutrition. training, coaching, dental and medical care., and free travel to places most would never see otherwise. Let's not forget the simple advantage most need to develop not only in a physical sense over three, four, or five years, but in maturity, too. Heck, the chance some have to gain local, regional or national fame or attention is a bonus for their post sports career whether they make it to the pros or not. That name recognition by fans give them a decent opportunity to have contacts few others would have or a chance of getting a job right out of school, most others would not have simply due to their name and popularity.

Very, very few kids make it to the pros, in any sport, and that should be taken into account.

These kids don't have to go to college. We all know it is exceptionally rare for anyone to go pro right out of HS and that is never in football.

Hey, that's not fair, right? It is not the fault of colleges this is the fact and probably wise. So, let's have the kids and their families pay for their own training and coaching and special nutrition, medical bills, and everything else to get Junior ready for the pros. Oh, yeah, they can't afford it. and it still is no ticket to become a sure fired pro. Unless they convince the NFL to set up a farm system, they have to go to college to paly games, unless they think semipro ball or arena ball is going to pick them up. Even so, far fewer kids will be able to play football after HS. It's a matter of numbers and scouting.

I wouldn't mind a small stipend to help players have a little money. In fact, I think they should allow players to get jobs in the Summer like any other kid, with the stipulation that if any fake jobs are giving out, the school that is involved gets major sanctions to the point they'll never try it, again, and the kid is banned from playing two years, not one.

We are risking killing the Golden Goose. Yeah, I think the NCAA is greedy and corrupt and should either be disbanded or greatly overhauled with new, honest people put in place, but that is another matter.

Whatever so called good is done by unions in college sports is going to be far outweighed by the bad, just like it is in the real world. We all are going to suffer for the minor benefit of a few.

Not true. Our insurance benefits, pension, and wages were all collectively bargained. Although the company had an advantage over the union because we really couldn't go on strike

You'd actually be wrong. Most HS sports fundraise to support their sport and then all the gates from games are taken by the schools. A typical homecoming game for our team brings in 20k. Do you not think that would be nice for the kids to have? Also if you go to Texas those HS are bringing in millions of dollars. So it is the same concept you just ignore it.

To those who ask why it's the end of college football. Many schools will cancel athletics since the business model will no longer create a profit. It's pretty simple. I also hope you guys are ok with removing an avenue that was proving opportunities for low income students to get top level educations.

The universities have more to do with why theses teams bring in money not the athletes. If it was just about having good athletes, minor league baseball and D league basketball would bring it as much as college sports.

If this ruling stands, these idiots will have gone out and killed the golden goose, well done folks.
