Default 7 on 7 flag football blocking

For those of you who have experience playing 7 on 7 flag football, why do teams keep 2 to 3 people (maybe even as many as 4) in close to the quarterback to block?

I know many 7 on 7 leagues have limited contact rules, so it's not like those blockers can do much more than just get in the way of incoming rushers.

Why not spread every player out wide, and have a quick throw to each receiver built into every play so if the defense chooses to keep defenders in the box to blitz, the quarterback can make a quick throw to the obviously uncovered receiver and take the free yardage?

Unless your QB is awesome, he'll be thankful for that extra 1-2 seconds in the pocket

Yeah, I can see how that makes sense.

Still though, you don't think the QB could get a quick throw out to the uncovered slot? "Grip it and rip it"?

Also, if you send only 3 receivers out, wouldn't that make the defensive coverage unit's job significantly easier?

when I played Intermurals there was a rule that the defense couldn't rush for a few seconds after the snap. We kept 2 guys in to block, and then when the rushers came it did give a short pass option, but can be countered by having a "contained" rush defense to be able to get back to a "lineman" if the ball was lobbed. Or you can play a "linebacker/spy" on the lineman.

Because if you have ever played without blockers and the quarterback receiving the ball and instantly having to run for his life, you'd understand the blockers to get that extra second to see the field...most flag football quarterbacks aren't payton manning that know exactly where their receivers will be the instant the ball is snapped

The blockers we had back in the day were short fast guys, they would simply stand in the way for a few seconds and then become dump off guys, or circle back and take a pitch from the qb and then become the QB themselves.

We basically sent two guys completely wide and had them sprint deep down the sideline every play. This made it 5 on 5 in the middle and much easier for our QB to do his thing at the point of attack. There was usually no safety shading over the top towards a sideline, so when they blitzed and got through quickly, he'd safely loft a timed ball down down the sideline without really looking. It rarely got caught, but when it did, it was usually a TD and forced the other team to use 2 safeties to stop it. Then it was 5 v 3 in the middle for us. Easy 10 yard gains. It worked against every team until they got taller and faster than us. Then we sucked.

Default 7 on 7 flag football blocking

It's harder than you think to catch the snap, grip the ball, and throw it accurately when blitzers are left totally unblocked. Makes more sense to keep blockers in who immediately become receivers once the blitzer beats them. That's what most flag teams do.

Not to mention, a defense can disguise their coverage/play zone and start jumping those balls when they know that the QB knows exactly where he is throwing pre snap and will have no chance to check to a second option.
