They receive badass (BA) points for keep them as pets. So basically unless you want to be a noob, then you have to get a reptile.

decide to have a Reptile Pet.... BUY A BEARDED DRAGON ! Those things
are so freekin' cool, and interact with their owners. They are touchy to
raise when they are young, but when they get older, they get very low
maintenance, and will allow you to hold them, and they want to climb

The Charleston news this morning reported that none of our hospitals have the antivenom. According to the story, Riverbanks Zoo and one other zoo has the antivenom, but it's not even FDA approved. They reported that if someone in this area were to get bit by this snake, they would have to have the zoo send the antivenom to the hospital, which could take a couple of hours. Columbia to Charleston is about 2 hours; a speeding ambulance/police car could be here sooner.

The same news story from this morning also said that the "good news" if bitten by this snake is that its venom takes longer to work into your system and that it could take several days before dying. Don't know how accurate that is, but that is what was reported on the local ABC Charleston news this morning.

I have snakes because I like snakes, I like watching them, studying their habits, watching them grow. It also doesn't hurt that many of my family members who I don't care to see no longer come over since there are snakes in the house. I have kept a variety of exotic pets over the years, snakes, hedgehogs, scorpions. I just don't like the normal pets most people keep.

Whoever let this snake loose should be charged with a heavy fine or spend some time in jail. If someone is killed by this snake, bring them up on some sort of murder charge. I don't care who you are - you should not bring in a venomous creature into this country and turn it loose.

15 minutes to bleed out of every orifice while vomiting and choking on more blood before you die? Awesome pet. At least my mini dachshunds won't do that to me.

It really does need to be that way, but unfortunately it's not in SC. I love
the fact that SC is very lenient with restrictions regarding the exotics trade
vs a lot of other states that have way too tight restrictions on the breeding,
selling and buying and transporting across state lines on them. 90% of that
is strictly State Government Bureaucracy. In SC, if it's not on the Federal
or State Endangered list it's OK to deal it at the Exotics shows in this state.
HOWEVER.... I do wish they would re-visit the laws regarding selling and
buying of Dangerous / Venomous Animals. I think you should register the
things, pay a License fee to own them, AND suffer stiff consequences if your
animal escapes or if you release it into the wild. .... I'm not really against
the idea of having Chips put in the Animals by the seller / breeder. This is
something that the State of Florida is battling now (Breeders vs State Gov.).
the State wants to make it mandatory that anyone dealing Dangerous
Exotics has to have tracking chips implanted into the animals so they can
be tracked if they are out of the cages. .... I can see both sides of the arguments
but safety of the general public as well as holding irresponsible owners
accountable should be the primary concern.

This is what happens when sellers sell venomous snakes to just anybody. All of the venomous sellers I knew will not sell to anyone that doesn't have a "hot" room set up. This means an escape proof room with multiple locks on it.

I don't know of any venomous keepers that don't have this set up. It is dangerous for them and the public to not follow basic safety guidelines. I would love to see a program like some states have were you have to have training with a certified venomous keeper for a set period of time, and show proof of proper keeping set ups, before you can buy a venomous snake. It is to easy to get one right now, and when they get loose, it gives all reptile keepers a bad name.

I have never had a snake get out, because I follow as many safety precautions as possible at all times. I keep the door closed to the room my snakes are in when I am handling, I keep them in locked cages, I don't mess around and my snakes are nonvenomous. I am thinking of starting my venomous training this summer, but don't know yet. I have a guy in mind that has volunteered to mentor me after us speaking for years about the snake industry. There are to many people that rush into purchasing a reptile because it looks cool, they don't know what they are getting into. Sure, that 2 foot Burmese Python looks cool now, but what will you do with it when it is 12 foot+ and has to eat rabbits or even a goat? Sure saying you have a Gaboon Viper is cool, they are beautiful snakes, but where is the $100,000+ for treatment going to come from if it bites you? These are things people don't think out. I research every snake before I buy it. I will never understand buying one just because you see it at a show. Stupid to not know everything about it before hand.
