Default Mad Men (Season 7.1)

Mad Men returned this past Sunday to low ratings. Really wish that AMC would not break the show up over 2 seasons. Itís doubtful that there is this large reveal at the end or that it is driving towards some type of final finish like there was with Breaking Bad. Weiner has already said that heís had the ending in mind since season 4 or 5 and that itís challenging to him b/c the last season will leave the characters where they will be forever.

Any way Ė It was good to have the show back. Definitely the smartest and most thought provoking thing on TV. Boy was it dark though. Peggy is stunted (as usual), Ken is turning into Pete, Roger is still in some type of counter culture haze, and Don/Megan are living bi-costal lives and holding onto their sham of a marriage. It was good to see that Pete has adjusted to SoCal life and was happy. It will be interesting to see where things go from here. Iíd like to see a happy ending but am not counting on it.

My favortie show on tv. All of the stuff i read before the season said every episode would be packed with substance. not really finding that to be the case. Maybe it will all go down in the second half of the season like Breaking Bad. That was the best ending of a show I have ever seen and I don't even love that show.

I thought episode 2 was packed full of substance. Maybe not plot related substance but definitely with character sketch and emotional substance.

Don really laid himself bare in front of Sally. He was as honest with her as he's been with anyone in a long while. Plus the final sequence was pretty touching.

In addition, I thought the episode really drove home Don's isolation. It was sad to see him languish in the appartment all day and then dress up when Dawn was coming over, just so he could keep up appearances. He wanted her to stay so badly just to have someone to talk to, but she left pretty quickly and he just turned the TV back on to keep him company.

Pther thoughts -

Damn Lou is a dick!

The whole Peggy and the flowers situtation had a certain sit-com vibe to it. It was pretty funny but also annoying b/c Peg is so oblivious sometimes to other people.

Plot was definitely serviced last night.

Kinda surprised that Don agreed to the terms for this return.

Also - I get that Joan is enjoying her new role as an accounts woman but there no reason to be such a bitch to Don. Joan got her partnership by banging the guy from Jaguar and Don was the only one who told her not to go through with it.

^^^^^

Seems that some viewers think that Joan is still pissed that Don fired Jaguar as a client last season. Although it was likely a good move by Don that lead to the Chevy deal and got rid of the shady POS who represented the dealership interests and was trying to drag dow the national campaign.

I see why Joan would be mad b/c it invalidates her "sacrifice" but she chose to be whore in spite of Don's protests.

Interesting what if article...

The stakes of a basic cable drama have nothing to do with the death of a sitting American president, but Weiner’s alternate history and the end of one of TV’s greatest achievements inspired a different kind of game. What if, instead of launching AMC as a heavyweight for original, prestigious programming, the blessed ones in HBO’s ivory tower deigned to green-light a pilot from longtime employee and Sopranos staff writer Matthew Weiner? It’s a fascinating question, opening up a wormhole of possibilities. Mad Men has reshaped the way many people watch and think about television, but it has also had a thunderous effect on the business of the medium. It kick-started a basic cable revolution, joining FX to create a wave of smaller networks that eventually joined the prestige fray. It also introduced the world to a slew of gifted actors working with the best possible material. And it has remained a furiously debated and analyzed show for all of its six and a half seasons, creating an impervious wall of clout for AMC. As the show’s final half-season starts Sunday on, yes, AMC, let’s ask, What if it didn’t?

Default Re: Mad Men (Season 7.1 & 7.2)

So I was right about it being a bad idea to split the last season into 2 parts (at least from a creative perspective). The end of 7.1 was July of '69 with the premier of 7.2 in April of '70. The time jump mirrors new seasons and not the usual 1 month jump between epsiodes of a "normal" season.

It feels like we've been cheated out of 17 episodes. However, if viewship goes up or MM wins a bunch of awards, AMC will feel it was the right call. I guess we'll see.

Anyone concerned that we may not see much ofthe SC&P gang back in NYC for these final 2 episodes? Some characters may be totally done - Joan, Teddy, maybe Pete.

Thoughts?

And so Mad Med is finished. How does that make you feel?

I always feel a little sad when good series, that I spent years watching, end.

I thought the finale was pretty good. I feel like the characters had already been given their endings in the previous 2 episodes and the finale was just epilogue. However, I did like the use of the Coke commerical if only to symbolize that Don was moving forward with his career.

Did the Coke ad come from a place of enlightenment, and place where Don can live a better life OR did Don use this trip in a cynical way to create an ad that pushes a prodcut that contributes to a multitude of health problems? I like that we have an ambiguous ending.

Since the Coke ad came out in 1971 we may have our answer for the reason for the fast forward.

Did we know of the health problems of sodas in 1970? I catch myself applying today's thinking and knowledge to eras when things weren't known. While assuming someone's identity today would be a major crime I just don't know for sure how much trouble Don would be in back in the 1950s.

Pretty good ending. It could have ended last week but I think that this episode tied up some thing nicely (forced in some cases) while leaving some speculation. I thought that somewhere during the season that a major problem would emerge with Don's true identity. He mentioned it at least twice in the last episodes but no one seemed to notice or care. Also Don gave away an incredible amount of wealth this season.

I didn't watch the show all that closely so take my thoughts on the final sequence with a grain of salt:

3. The Coke ad was written by someone else and is meant to indicate that Don took up the hippie lifestyle.

2. Don came up with the ad idea and gave it to Peggy knowing that it would cement her career advancement...a parting gift if you will.

1. Don knew that he had been a shit husband and father and was really nothing more than a paycheck because of it. The convos with Sally (IMO she's taken on the role of Betty) and especially talking to a dying Betty got to him.
But even then sometimes you have to be hit with a sledgehammer between the eyes to get it. The hug/cry session with the guy at the end was that moment. Don realized that he's eventually going to die and no one is going to give a damn. There will be no legacy for Dick Whitman except the lie that his life has been.
IMO the grin before the Coke ad came on was the light going off in his head for a brilliant idea. I'd like to think that he used that idea to get back in good graces with his employer and then built a relationship with his children...ie, the death of Don Draper and the emergence of Dick Whitman.
Or he could have continued to be a selfish prick with the thought of "I'm going to make a million off of this idea!"
