Default Kentucky Inmate Starves to Death

The indifference and apathy by the medical staff is astounding, but all too common.

This is true, but you can follow policy and procedure to make sure all that can be done is done. As a healthcare provider I get incensed by this lackadaisical attitude.

The problem here seems to be with the manner of suicide. Had he simply chosen to hang himself, there would be nobody asking questions.

No, what would be more cost effective would be to stop locking up nonviolent drug offenders. You know, either that or stop using the prison system as a pseudo-psyche ward.

Read the article if you failed to give it a glance. Protocols were clearly not followed and this man was left to die. But hey, criminals deserve what they get, right?

I thought he was starved out by inmates or something like that. Changes the story when you realize he chose to do this. Dude shouldn't have stopped taking his meds in the first place. What a sillyhead.

I'm not sure where they got the women's underwear idea. It's pink but it's definitely boxers. And they are sold to inmates voluntarily (they started as a fundraiser) not forced on them.

The article is unclear on whether he stops taking meds voluntarily or if they were withheld. Initially it states he stopped, but later states that an investigation showed meds were withheld from him.

Either way, there was a significant failure in the system in this case.

It will be interesting to see what the true story is, if they ever find out/release it.

And yes, it saves taxpayers money (my initial reaction), but reading the article, there was wrongdoing. I feel more sympathy for a non-violent offender. However, if this were a murderer or child molester...not so much sympathy.

Good point.

We really do need to reevaluate how we try to deter crime and reform criminals. Granted, this was an isolated incident but the system as a whole only seems to perpetuate itself.

I believe it stems from attitudes of the professionals toward these ill inmates. Frequently it's thought that they're malingering or trying to get something for nothing. While it can be just that, no medical professional should assume that. You need to take all complaints at face value and then everyone comes out better in the end, ie not DEAD!
