Default Verizon FIOS - yay or nay?

Called Verizon about an issue with our internet account and they offered a deal to switch from DirecTV to FIOS. My main concern is of course Gamecock sports and it isn't totally clear what FIOS has in that regard. Could anyone here with FIOS chime in as to what you get (or if it's good/bad in general)?

Thanks!

Not a FIOS person but everything will be different now with ATT buying Direct TV.

My girlfriend has FIOS, and has no complaints about it. I can't get it, as Verizon is spending more on marketing and advertising than they are on expanding the service.

We are moving in 2 weeks. Currently cant get FIOS but will be able to and are switching. Cheaper and we get the SEC network as part of the deal. Giving it a shot.

Dude, FiOS is the best thing to ever happen to cable television and internet.

It beats every other provide I've had by an insane margin...just isn't even close (Charter, Comcast, Time Warner, Atlantic, had them all). The rates are lower than most everyone, you get the most programming for the $, and the internet speeds...other people who pay the same or more than I are getting half the speed. I average 25mbps on their lowest level of speed.

I can't say enough positive things about it.

I do some marketing for FiOS so I may be a little jaded, but you won't get a better service than FiOS. It's a 100% fiber optic service run directly to you home and I'll be completely honest with you. The promotions they have right now are the best they ever presented to the market. Right now just for signing up you can get $300-$400 and a free tablet, but I'm not on the sales side so I'll save the sales pitch. You won't find a more reliable, better quality service in America. Pricing is competitive and there is currently a 2 year pricing guarantee. Just don't go into it thinking you're going to get a BMW for the price of a Honda. But you are in New Jersey and that is a key market that has its own pricing and packages.

And to build off of what Cola said the FCC rates FiOS a 114% of the speeds you pay for 100% of the time. So he is probably paying for 15 meg internet and getting 25.

And Swamp...it's not Verizon not wanting to expand the serviceability. It's the timeliness of establishing the infrastructure and the fall out of the Bell monopoly that is slowing growth. There are some legalities that prevent expansion currently and due to that it's only available to 12% of the USA.

Thanks for the replies! After doing additional research I decided to stick with DirecTV - the FIOS internet is very good like you guys said, but the consensus seems to be that DirecTV is better for the sports fan - more sports programming overall and a lot more HD sports programming.

Plus there were several tales of a low initial price for FIOS but once the 12/24 months were up they jacked the rates up considerably. And as for the SEC Network, I'm pretty certain that all of the major providers will eventually come to terms and carry it, but as of now FIOS does not so whoever said you were going to get it was being slightly less than 100% truthful ;-)

Plus we have quite a bit of stuff saved on our DVR which I would imagine we would lose by switching, so overall I decided it wouldn't be worth it.

But thanks again for the testimonials guys

No problem Jesery. You're right SEC net is only available to Dish and ATT customers currently. But don't worry about the DVR you can transfer things yourself so you don't have to lose stored recording. (Just a little tip for the future) About pricing, your bill will go up approx $40 after the first two years depending on add-ons, but you can call in and renegotiate after your two years are up. However, I can't blame you for sticking with DTV they do have the most HD channels in the industry and DTV does cater to the sports fan.
