Default Connor Shaw - time to step up

This year we need Shaw to step up, big time. He has been getting playing time since 2010. He knows the offense better than any QB spurrier has ever had.

He has got to step his game up and start slinging the ball. Like he's shown he can do. We all know Shaw doesn't have a great arm. But he has enough to make every throw he is asked. He just has to trust the system. Which is something he hasn't done week to week here, ever.

Today I spent my day watching five games from past season since I have them recorded. And I was not impressed with watching him play. He held on to the ball way to long and ended up dumping it off almost every play. And I could feel myself getting mad at him all over.

He's gotta stop playing "shaw ball" and just do what spurrier effin tells him to do. I watched him take a sack after having four seconds of clean pocket time and spurrier said "why won't he throw the damn ball" and the thing is, he has shown that he can run Spurrier's pass offense. He just chooses not to. Most of the time.

I honestly feel like he was the one piece holding last years team back. When we needed to pass the ball to win, we couldn't. And that's just a sad fact. Our team was really one dimensional with him in.

We've all seen what our offense can do when we have a QB who will let the ball go. No Need to bring that up. But if we are going to get over the hump were gonna need to sling it more than we have.

Shaw has got to come out aganst UNC a different QB and just sling the damn ball all over. If he is still playing shaw ball and dancing around in the backfield I hope we don't waste to much time playing him this year. Because I believe we're better than 150 pass yards a game.

He will be healthy this year for the first time in who knows when. So there is no excuse for him not to be lights out. It really is his time to shine. This is the year for him to become that player we all thought he could be,

Everytime I see someone post a QBs win loss record, I assume that person is just a casual football fan. I've watched many of our games over and over and anyone that actually pays attention can see that our offense hasn't been our strength.

Exactly. How many times has shaw turned the ball over and the other team about to take the lead then our d turn around and take the ball back to win? Our D has saved us many times.

Definitely the defense deserves credit, but that's not the only reason Shaw has won 85% of his starts. The guy is a pure playmaker.

I hope he turns into a yard maker too haha. Most fans watch and see him evading sacks running around for a gain of a few yards, and think oh he did great just to not get sacked.

But really if he would have thrown the ball when the play called for it he would have picked up 20 yards thru the air.

You are correct he certainly can make plays with his legs. But most of the time he could have already made a bigger play with his arm had he thrown the ball. Something to look for when rewarding past game.

I've re-watched more than 5 of our games from last year over and over. I am not a casual fan, so your assumption is incorrect. I get frustrated when Shaw holds on to the ball too long as well, but I consider his entire body of work as our quaterback. The guy's completion percentage is above avg, he can outrun most teams front 7, and like already noted--he wins games.

I too wish he wouldn't be so reluctant to release the football at times...but overall, I think he can take us to the ship with his current skill set.

If you take away the interception at the end of the LSU game & the total debacle at FLA...Shaw's resume would be laudable!

19 straight completions.

Shaw has games where he probably wished he made a few better decisions (LSU late & Florida) but what QB hasnt? For the injuries he sustained I thought he played exceptional. It's his last year (possibly ever playing football) He's going to get it done.

Sorry my comment wasn't directed toward you. Just in general.

I too look at his whole body of work. Including the negative. (Not saying you don't) when you look at his throws most of them are short. And that is why his % is so high.

And I think your right. I think he can too with his skill set. He just has to use all of it. Which is something he doesn't do enough.

I just don't understand posts like this. Has Connor made mistakes during crunch time...of course! But what QB hasn't? I will be waiting for someones response. If u don't want to use his win/loss record...use his individual stats! He is easily one of the best...if not THE best QB to put on garnet & black. He has finished in the top 15 in THE COUNTRY in QB rating...& that includes last year while he wasneven 100% at any point during the season. Can he improve...yes...but like said...even the best can get better too

We have 2 good QB's who have shown the ability to step up when needed and I expect us to need them both to do so this year all the way to the BCS title game. To dismiss the starting record of a QB to his teammates can be done to every QB that has played the game, numbers tell a story but I agree that the eyeball test tells the entire story and I think every GAMECOCK fan knows that Shaw as well as Thompson will have to make better decisions consistantly all year for us to be successful. My eyeball tells me that Shaw is as good a QB that I have ever seen strut his stuff at the Brice and he has improved every year in uniform, I do not see that changing.

I don't think Connor has to prove anything else to any of us... He is our leader and he will continue to do what he has always done, win ball games. Connor is a warrior and brings a new dimension to the game with his scrambling "tendency" if you don't believe me just watch the tape from the Georgia game

Um I hope this isn't serious? Best QB to put on the garnet and black? Hit me up when the dude throws for over 3000 yards and 20 tds. I don't think you want to use his individual stats. They are pretty average.

He's been a starter for one and a half season's. You cant really look at last season seeing as how he was hurt for pretty much the entire year. Both injuries affected his throwing motion and how much he could put on the ball, and yet, the kid won all but two starts.

Seems like you're the one with the hurt feelings. I think the problem is everyone dissagrees with you. Connor Shaw has more than stepped up since being called on to lead this team. Its not always about passing percentages, and touchdowns. its about being a leader, and he is the best leader at quarterback that South Carolina has had in a very long time. Maybe since Phil Petty.
