Lots of interesting songs already in this thread. I'm going to listen to a few. However, here's your winner. Song is awesome (words don't even make sense to me at times) and the video was cutting edge back in its day. Drumroll please...

That's the way we'll plan it then

Starting Monday Morning We'll get the nominations for it.

Maybe a 64 song tournament, with the voting lasting 3 days instead
of a full week.

I say, Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 - which would as mentioned include Jimi Hendrix and also Rush, but would eliminate a-ha as they did have a followup #20 hit with "The Sun Always Shines On TV", and Quiet Riot who had a minor hit after "Cum On Feel The Noize"

So, take it fwiw but that's my vote for criteria anyway

Good Question.
I would say right off the top of my head, An artist (Country, Pop, Rock,
etc....) that had only one hit, and it would have to be something breaking
the Top 40.

Maybe a crossover artist that had a single top 40 hit in another genre
as well.

Thoughts / Suggestions ?

I agree. Now should we vote on the artist or on the individual song? I ask, because technically the artist is the "one-hit wonder", however it is the song that everyone remembers. For example, My first offering Turn Up the Radio has to be about the most mis-attributed song I know. Nearly everyone has heard it, but a lot of folks have no idea who Autograph is. I've met folks who would swear it was The Scorpions or some other 80s rock band singing it.

Anyways if we vote on the song, then we have to realize that certain songs have been done by multiple artists, some of which are not one-hit wonders. Prime examples of this would be Last Kiss which was remade, and in my opinion destroyed, by Pearl Jam. Tainted Love was remade, and I would say improved upon, by Marilyn Manson. Only the originals in this case would be considered one-hit wonders.

And then you have the covers which are the one hit wonders. I can't think of a really good one off the top of my head, but I think Puttin' on the Ritz by Taco comes pretty close since I think it was Fred Astaire who first popularized it.

Anyways I say we just keep it simple and vote on the artist just to keep things clear.

As for qualifying artists, why don't we use the criteria listed here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of..._United_States

Quote:
Billboard magazine journalist Wayne Jancik's book The Billboard Book of One-Hit Wonders defines a one-hit wonder rather conservatively, as "an act that has won a position on Billboard's national, pop, Top 40 just once." He therefore includes influential performers such as Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix solely on the basis of their Top 40 performance on the Billboard Hot 100 (the criteria thus ignores competing charts such as those published by Mediabase and the now defunct Cash Box and Radio & Records). In his definition of an "act", Jancik distinguishes between a solo performer and any group he or she may have performed in; thus Roger Daltrey is distinguished from The Who, Joplin is distinguished from Big Brother and the Holding Company and Ted Nugent is distinguished from The Amboy Dukes. He restricts his reporting time to the period from the start of the "rock-and-roll era" (defined by the author as 1 January 1955) to 31 December 1992. The latter date was picked to allow a five-year "lag time" before publication for a listed one-hit wonder to produce a second hit; this unfortunately does not allow for a longer hiatus between hits for a particular performer. For example, Lenny Kravitz is listed for "It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over" (No. 2, August 1991);[1] the book therefore misses subsequent hits, such as "Fly Away" (which hit number 12 on the Hot 100) and "Dig In" (which hit number 31 on the Hot 100).

Fred Bronson, a journalist and former writer for Billboard magazine, in his book Billboard's Hottest Hot 100 Hits, uses the criterion that if an artist has another song hitting the Billboard Hot 100, is ineligible to be considered a one-hit wonder.

I am loving this idea. Perhaps bracketing across genres and sub-genres? Because who could possibly decide between this

and this head to head?

Of course simply going by chart criteria can lose some of the magic that is music itself, as Geddy Lee sang in "Spirit Of Radio" - "...music can still be open hearted, [and] not so coldly charted..."

Then again, that song only hit #51 so who really cares what it has to say?
