Default Keyshawn Woods

Paul Biancardi ‏@PaulBiancardi 55m55 minutes ago Stallings, NC

Former Charlotte 49er SG Keyshawn Woods told ESPN that he is making an un-official visit to South Carolina today.

------------

Gastonia's Keyshawn Woods (6-3, 185), a two-time Conference USA freshman of the week last season for the Charlotte 49ers, has asked to be released from his scholarship.

A former Gaston Day standout, Woods averaged 8.4 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 32 games (three starts) for the 49ers last season. He had a career-high 18 points in a 77-72 win at Marshall on Jan. 10.

Woods did not attend Thursday's news conference introducing former Charlotte Hornets NBA assistant coach Mark Price as the replacement for Alan Major as the 49ers new head coach.

If Woods transfers to another NCAA Division I school, he would have to sit out the upcoming 2015-16 season but have three years eligibility remaining. If he transferred to a NCAA Division II or III school, a NAIA or junior college, he would eligible to play next season.

We'll see how things go with Eric Cobb today, and that will determine how far the conversation with Keyshawn goes.

Need to also see how things go with Bunch. We don't have a full roster at this time and Martin wants a full roster.

Great news, we need him and Cobb to give us that much needed height we have been missing.

With Cobb and Bunch qualifying, I assume Keyshawn is probably now out.....is this correct.

Looks like we'll take him if he accepts the offer. He'll have to sit out a year.

He can hit the three!

Woods played his freshman season at Charlotte where he averaged over eight points per game and led Conference USA in three point shooting at better than 46%. The native of Gastonia received his release from the 49ers last month following their coaching change.
Woods paid an unofficial visit to USC Monday and said he got a good look at what the Gamecocks have to offer.

“They just made it pretty clear that they really want me,” said Woods who added that he has an offer from USC.

Woods said he’s also looking at possible visits to Auburn, Creighton, Butler, St. Joseph’s and VCU before he makes a decision later this summer in time to enroll for the second session of summer school.

He has an offer and can shoot the 3. I would love to see us get him as we need a great outside shooter. Looks like we don't have any scholarships left if Bunch qualifies unless someone else leaves the team or someone pays their own way. I think there is still a question of Blanton's status, if he is able to play basketball again.

He was 41 of 88 from 3. So that's not some inflated number due to low shot attempts. He's a scorer and would be a great compliment to Dozier and Seventh.

I like the fact that he can shoot well from behind the arc. It's a skill that we seem to be missing from our squad for quite some time... That being said, some of Keyshawn's OTHER stats bother me, and make me wonder if it makes it worth the investment (to have him on the squad JUST as a 3 point specialist).

Keyshawn put in 813 total minutes for the 49ers, playing in all 32 games last season (which made him the 6th man, in terms of overall minutes). Here's where it gets tricky for me... despite 813 minutes on the court, Keyshawn only had 34 attempted free throws (19 total in conference play). That means that despite SIGNIFICANT minutes on the floor, he was not really attracting much attention from defenders (or pushing the ball into opponents), as they were not touching him. Granted, I didn't watch too many 49ers games (I did see several, though), but this COULD mean that he was getting a lot of open looks from 3 point land, which AIN'T gonna happen in the SEC. Put simply... that stat troubles me.

The OTHER big issue I've got is that out of the "big 6" (starters or key players mentioned above) Keyshawn committee more personal fouls, than all but 3 of them. This means that despite not being a starter, he was sending more than his fair share of opponents to the FT line - something that CFM is not too keen on.

Keyshawn would be a good addition from a pure shooting standpoint, but the defensive abilities just don't seem quite up to snuff with what we need at this point in time.

Not sold.... yet.

It's definitely the highlight for bringing him in.

He is an outside threat. His free throw attempts definitely reflect that. Take into account that he attempted 211 fg and 88 of them were from three. That's 41.7% of his shot selection. His FTr was 16.1% and that is low. Not alarming since he seems to be a jump shooter primarily.

This isn't as big of a deal and can simply be chalked up to inexperience. It's a different game, and it is something that he'll adjust to and will have to adjust to if he wants to play for Frank. It's not a big deal on our team as he'll have a year off the court to get better if he chooses to play here.

I do agree that his defensive abilities are a little alarming. I don't believe it isn't something that can't be fixed. After all, he will have a year off to learn the defense and buy into the system. If he doesn't he'll ride the pine, which is something we've seen Frank is going to do if you aren't playing his way.

I think the knock on him is athleticism if I read between the lines correctly.

As a freshman with less than elite athleticism, I'm not sure any of those stats are particularly bad. On the other hand, it was at a lower level so that might be magnified.

A lot of limited college players figure out a way to do well even at high major level. But if he's never a huge impact player there are worse things to have than a rotation shooter in a lineup that can create shots for him.

It seems like an oversign at the guard position to me though unless someone else is not going to be on scholarship going forward.

Wasn't Shaw supposed to be a big time scorer and it never worked out for him.
I'm wondering if this guy is an instant replay.
