Default Re: Womens Recruiting

We only have one commit for the 15 class - a top PG out of Canada, she was a member of their national girl's team. She's very highly rated by their national evaluators. After that, no one....

The 2016 class is already starting to fill up with committed top prospects. We have no one committed to us, and no real recruiting news/scoop of anyone who may be higher on us than just having us as one of many finalists for them.

We are losing Welch, Ibiam, and Gaines from this year's team. All 3 have shown heart and have contributed substantially to getting the team to it's present high level in wcbb. Welch has done the most: she has led the team in scoring and rebounding in past seasons, but sort of took a step back in statistical contributions this season to give the youngsters more opportunities. She was still able to step up as she has always done in her career, winning SECT MVP this year in leading USC to their first ever tournament title. Ibiam has also seen her contributions diminished this season from last season. We'll miss all 3 of them....

IMO Coates and Wilson now become starters next year. They were the 2nd and 3rd leading scorers and top 2 rebounders this season, coming off the bench and playing about a half of a game each. Give them 25-30 minutes per game next season, and they could develop into 15-20 ppg type scorers. Wilson is almost there already. And Mitchell who is our leading scorer returns next season for one more season, so we should be good with scoring from those 3 as long as they stay healthy...

I'm hoping to see some great things from both Cuevas and White. Jatarie was almost as highly rated out of HS as Wilson was, and she has shown some glimpses of her talent. Cuevas is a sparkplug that will have crowds at CLA oohing and ahhing like they are at a fireworks show for the next 3 years. I'd also like to see Duckett step up next season: don't know why she was so limited in contributing this season - she was rated a 5* by ESPN and a mid to high 4* by most everyone, so not sure what kept her down, but I hope she steps up next season.

So we're looking at Mitchell, Wilson, Coates, Sessions, and Dozier as our starting 5 next season. Have Cuevas, White, Roy, Duckett, Cliney, Davis, and incoming PG Colley coming in off the bench, and see what we can do. IMO, we will have a shot at reaching another Final Four next season, but it falls off from there. Mitchell, Sessions, Dozier, Roy, and Davis leave after next season, and it looks like we won't have a great class to replace them...

I'm curious, why do you think our chances fall off after next year? Wilson, Cuevas, and White are just going into their Soph. seasons. Coates just a junior. Mitchell will be a loss for sure, but surely you aren't basing tourney expections on any of the other juniors.

Default Re: Womens Recruiting

I think we're looking into a juco post player Evelyn Akhator to finish out the 2015 class in addition to Shay Colley. She seems to have offers from many of the top schools in the SEC and Big 12. Plus we haven't seen Cliney yet on the court so that's pretty much two new players we have next year.

As for 2016, Espn Hoopgurlz has the following players considering South Carolina:

Lauren Cox (http://espn.go.com/high-school/girls...er/_/id/183788)
Natalie Chou (http://espn.go.com/high-school/girls...er/_/id/185399)
Nausia Woolfolk (http://espn.go.com/high-school/girls...er/_/id/191047)
Jacaira Allen (http://espn.go.com/high-school/girls...er/_/id/207163)

As Conway pointed out, we lose 5 players after next year and they're all guards. Look for staley to bring in at least 3-4 for 2016. Plus we have yet to see how this run to the final four will affect recruiting.

If we don't bring in post player Akhator then I think we're done with 2015.. Colley will be it. There's still time to improve our 2016 class and hopefully our final four run helps.. Personally, I think our 2017 class will be strong. That's when we'll really reap the benefits of our final four run. It's still important that we improve 2016 though, because that class will be providing a lot of depth for Aja's class who I think will make some big noise their senior year.. and probably before then honestly.

For anyone concerned.. Staley is on a tear recruiting in Texas and Florida. We'll reap those benefits eventually.

Staley seems to have found a good one in Colley:

Shay Colley of Brampton, Ont., has emerged as, arguably, the premier prep in the country. Ranked No. 5 in the International ELITE 25, the future South Carolina scoring guard has a unique combination of athleticism and skill. Look for the four-star prospect to make an impact for an already talent-rich Dawn Staley roster.

From what I am hearing we will bring in a post player for this class, probably a JC player. As long as Staley is here I don't look for any down years in recruiting. I think she is the best coach in any sport to ever coach at USC.

For a while I thought Colley might slip in under the radar, but guess not. If memory serves, Shay acquitted herself quite well scoring in the high teens in the two games Canada played against Dawn's 17&U USA team.

Runs in the genes, too, as an older cousin also played for Team Canada.

Jatarie White was hurt/had the flu this season so she didn't get to play a lot. I think she will be a great one. With Bianca, A'ja, Alaina and Tiffany getting even better and the steady Asia Dozier and Tina Roy, Shay Colley, Kaydra Duckett and Doniyah Cliney will have time to learn and become key contributors. We won't be quite as deep next season, but our talent will be more experienced.

I REALLY like Colley... She can shoot and she's aggressive off the dribble drive (an area we lack in). Probably end up being the most aggressive player after Cuevas. Colley and Cuevas on the floor at once.. with Coates and Wilson.. Oh my.

I also found this write up from last year before she signed with us.

Shay Colley (Brampton, Ontario) Brampton Warriors 17U: The five foot eight, a member of the Canada Women's Junior team, is a true point guard with a college ready frame, played extremely well. Colley playing in her first exposure event since 8th grade had her entire repertoire on display. Although she has taken visits to several DI schools Colley remains unsigned. But after this past weekend she caught the attention of several ACC and SEC programs. Colley used a killer crossover coupled with her explosive first step to attack the paint looking to score or dish to slashing teammates. She is a real floor general and can and will be make all the right passes. Colley used her speed and quickness to create havoc at both ends of the floor with in your face on ball defense. She also showed that she can consistently stroke the midrange jumper as well as be a threat from beyond the arc. Colley also demonstrated the ability to translate her speed and athleticism into dividends on the defensive end by forcing turnovers and cashing in on the ensuing possession. Look for her to come off the board fairly soon.

If Shay is the top player out of Canada this year, that should equate to her being a top 10-15 recruit in the U.S. simply by comparing population. Certainly, she could be even higher than that. I'm not sure how strong girls basketball is in Canada.

Who are we going to sign in this late signing period?

The ACC wbb rebound leader last season, Sarah Imovbioh, is transferring from UVA & she visited with Dawn Staley this past weekend. This was the weekend of the spring game.
I'm hoping we sign a good shooting guard.

There's a good bit of movement in WBB this offseason. Imovbioh would be interesting.. Dawn wants another post and she's already graduated from UVA so she would be available to play this season. We would only have her for one year.
