Yeah, we live on a creek that feeds into Lake Murray. I don't wish for the view given the taxes and if I really was interested in boating I'd much rather join the Lake Murray Boat Club over actually owning a boat. (we're trying to sell our speedboat in case anyone is interested).

I figure most of the opinions have to do with what was done when you're there. If you didn't know to go to the Vista and instead spent your time on Decker for example, a crappy view of Cola would be completely understandable...unless you're really into Korean.

At least Decker Blvd. Korean food is excellent. I can't pronounce the name of the restaurant I like, but it is very good. You just have to go with more than 2 people, lock your car doors, make sure the sun is still out, and sit in the restaurant where you can keep an eye on your vehicle at all times.

Lived in Columbia for 14 year
lived in Greenville for 8 years
Visited Charleston a bunch.

My vote is Greenville. (Only bad thing is Tatertown is too close.)
Columbia has USC plus some other nice things.
Charleston is a very nice to visit but I don't think I would choose to live there.

I lived in the metro Columbia area for 25 years. I prefer where I am now, so I vote none of the above.

I've been to a couple of Korean places on Decker and at the Blue Cactus in 5 points and never liked it. There's something about that combo of spices that doesn't agree with me.

Viet Pho on Decker I went to alot. That place is awesome, and their curry (vietnamese curry I'd guess, although I'd hate to say that's what vietnamese curry is always like that since it's the only example I've ever had) is very good, partly because it's so different. Also eating a bowl of pho is such a unique culinary experience. Definitely delicious when it's cold outside. I believe they opened up another location or just flat out moved to Forest Drive if I'm not mistaken.

Default Re: Charleston, Columbia or Greenville?

Charleston used to be my favorite place anywhere, but the past few
years (2005 or so and beyond) the appeal has drastically dropped off. I
Still love the area south of Charleston (Edisto, Seabrook, Beaufort...area,
but Charleston itself has tried to change for the Tourism business, and has
definitely changed for the worse since the mid 2000s.

I was born, raised and lived in the Golden Strip area of Greenville County,
and That is home to me. Been a resident of Columbia since moving down
here for the job in 2002, but I MISS THE UPSTATE SOoooo Much !

Of these three cities, Greenville gets my vote. I miss the area and love
getting back up that way about once every couple of months to visit family.

Greenville gets my vote, mainly because I grew up in Greer.

Charleston is nice, but another poster said it pretty well, they try to fit a lot of city/people in a small space. Nice place to visit, but not my first choice in places to live.

Columbia has Gamecock sports, and a great location (within 2 hours of the mountains, the beach, and Charlotte), and some good restaurants, but there isn't much else.

Maybe it's just because I grew up going to school with Clemson fans, but it's not that bad. Especially now, where I get to rub everything in. I'd say it's about 60% Clemson and 40% Carolina fans in Greenville/Greer. If you get closer to Spartanburg, it's more like 50/50, maybe even a little more on the Carolina side.

I've never been much of a Charleston fan. People just love it, though. I'm not much of a beach person so it's not really for me. I like visiting, but not to live.

Columbia is my home. I like being close to both the beach and the mountains, and USC sports. The nightlife and young professional crowd is improving. Greenville is nice as well.

I rank them:
Columbia
Greenville
Charleston

I would love to live in Charleston but it's very very expensive. Also the commute into town would be a lot tougher if I recall from my parents living in Summerville up til 2001. Downtown charleston does seem to be getting more for the tourists by the year. My memories of the surrounding area are "only" 10 or so years ago, and it seems IOP was a deserted island compared to what it is now.

Greenville is last on my list. To my knowledge it's smaller than Columbia in terms of built up area and doesn't have a lot of cool neat areas besides downtown. It does have the draw of a PF Changs and perhaps being somewhat cooler during the year. Any advantage over the other two Gvegas has is mitigated in my stereotyped mind with the Clemson fans that must run rampant and unchecked up there. Seriously, there should be a law. My opinion of Greenville is as stereotypical and knee jerk as it gets though. I know a lot of members on the board live up there.

In general I like living on some land and not really into a 1/4 acre lot in a neighborhood right now, although that may change. I currently live in Lexington (according to the Post Office, but it's pretty much Gilbert), just FYI.
As you said you do have a very uninformed opinion of Greenville. It is more spread out than Columbia and feels bigger as well. The food and shopping Greenville offers blows away anything Columbia has to offer.

I'd pick Greenville overall because I love the mountains.

This is about where I'm at... Plus I've spent a lot of time in Charleston and have just recently started visiting Greenville in the last few years. I enjoy the low country and would definitely live there... But the mountains are my thing.

I haven't been back to South Carolina in twenty years so I'm sure things have changed. I graduated high school in attended USC in Columbia and have only flown into and driven thru Greenville. Although I only spent a couple of weeks visiting Charleston but I loved the city and it gets my vote.

1-Charleston- I mean seriously, the only bad thing about Charleston is the humidity in the summer. History, laid back, beaches, friendly people, great food, never have a moment of "nothing to do", perfect.

2-Greenville- I live here now, and I love it. Its awesome being so close to the mountains, but still having that "big city" feel, even though Greenville isn't that big. And honestly, you'd be hard pressed to find a better way to just pass time than taking a stroll down town. I really hope Columbia models itself after downtown Greenville.

3-Columbia- Columbia will always be home to me. But its boring.

What he said. You need to take a weekend and just hangout up here. You're an hour from the mountains, There are three lakes that can easily be taken advantage of with just an hour drive or less, there are places to hike, go fishing, hang out in the rivers, and I don't know where you got your review, but downtown is pretty amazing. Always something going on down there, whether it be amateur theater at falls park, a concert series, a festival, or a movie night in falls park.

Its constantly ranked in the top 10 best cities in America…And if you like food its one of the best food places you can go.
