Default D-Day & Normandy Campaign Pics - Post Your Relatives Who Were Involved

I'll start. This is My Uncle Jim. He was in the 82nd Airborne and was involved with the Normandy Invasion, Market Garden (aka Monty's Follies), the Battle of the Bulge, and many other battles.

He passed away in April of 2013 at the age of 91.

According to Steven Ambrose, many of those that survived D-Day, wound up getting killed in later action.

Ultimate sacrifices made long before I was ever born.

I was in France on D Day in 2004 - the 60th anniversary. It was a pretty cool event. It was definitely newsworthy as Reagan died the night before. Very memorable day in France and very cool being there for the anniversary.

Maybe one of the greatest days in the 20th century. That day changed world history.

The Russians were going to win anyway, we just helped speed up the out come.

My grandmother's first husband died dturing, or shortly after D-Day. Had one grandfather in the S. Pacific and another served during Korea. Had some family in the War Department in Tokyo, so didn't have anyone in the European Theatre, I don't think.

My grandfather served during WWII but I think he was in either England or Belgium at the time.

Watched a special on Eisenhower on Netflix. There were a lot of conflicting opinions on whether to drop the paratroopers on the beach or behind the German line, creating a flank. It was a big, big decision, and ultimately he felt that if they dropped behind the line the Germans would not have to immediately be concerned with them and could fully focus on those landing on the beach.

My Uncle Wayne was involved in some way but he never talked about it.
The high school I attended Robert G. Cole H.S. is named after a Medal of Honor winner who parachuted in with the 101st. He was later killed in Operation Market Garden. I had the honor of meeting his wife.

Had an uncle that came ashore at Omaha. As soon as he stepped off the landing craft, he looked to his side and saw his best friend dead, floating in the water.

About 10 days or so after D-Day, he and his company were involved in a fire fight in the famous hedgerow territory. A German Panzer came at them and an explosion landed nearby, wounding him and knocking him semiconscious. The last thing he remembered before passing out was the tank coming straight for him.

Layer, he awoke, and found himself on a stretcher, being carried by German soldiers. He thought he was a prisoner and passed back out. Turned out, those were German prisoners carrying him back to American lines. His wounds were severe enough to send him back to the states for months of treatment.

Granddad was in charge of fuel for the 1st Army. Big freakin' job as you can imagine.

He arrived on D-Day +3, I think. He said they had cleared bodies and debris up by then. I always found that remarkable.

I used to have a neighbor who drove one of the beach landing crafts. He would go back and forth between the ships and the beach. Dropping off a fresh round of soldiers and then collecting the wounded / dead and bringing them back to the ships. Over and Over and over again.

He would tell me stories for hours about it. He had dementia and was hard of hearing. Couldn't remember what he did 10 minutes ago. But could tell you about that day in great detail.

Maybe so but our involvement, as well as England and France, kept all of Europe from becoming Communist rather than just a few countries.

Due in large part to our Lend-Lease Aid to them, and our bombing campaign.
