Default Rule Changes

30 second shot clock.

No timeouts during live play.

I don't like shortening the shot clock. Neither does Frank Martin. But, it should make it easier on the defense, which could benefit USC.

Don't like the short clock, getting too much like pro ball. The college game is a much better game. Too much being done to create more scoring. I love a good defensive game and having good defensive play from our team.

Don't like the 52-45 games either. The last 2 years games have become a game of little or no scoring and they are trying to boost that.

puhleeeassee...I want a 28 second clock...Let the players play ball...I get so sick of watching the players roaming the top of the key for 30 sec each possession trying to dribble the varnish off the court...Get the ball up court and get into a play without the coaches trying to micromanage everything...This will make the game far more watchable...56-53 games turn my stomach

Fast play turns good basketball into street basketball, less team play and less team discipline. This is the very reason a coach like Frank Martin is against the short clock. I agree with Martin 100% on this issue.

To those who want a shorter shot clock, how short would it have to be to negatively affect the game, and why?

For those who want the college game to be more like the NBA, why don't you just watch the NBA?

Agreed,

College shoudnt be like the nba. Too many teams with a lot of levels of talent. If you changed it prepare to see UK, ku, unc, and duke win it all each year. Some styles might be boring, but some of those styles is how a team without all the 5 stars can win the game against teams with 5 stars.

Actually, players can still call timeouts during play, just not coaches now.

Concise summary of changes:

-30 second shot clock
-Only 3 of your 5 timeouts carry over to second half, and you may be assessed technical foul more readily if you lollygag after a timeout.
-No extra media timeout if there’s a regular timeout called within 30 seconds of that timepoint.
-Coach can’t call timeout during live play.
-Reducing the amount of time allotted to replace a disqualified player from 20 to 15 seconds.
-Restricted-area arc from 3 feet to 4 feet.
-Officials to penalize players who fake fouls.
-shot clock violations on made field goals reviewable throughout the entire game.
-Lesser technical fouls (hanging on the rim and delaying the resumption of play) are now one-shot penalties.
-Eliminating the five-second ‘closely guarded’ rule while dribbling the ball.
-Can now dunk in pregame warm-ups and at halftime (as opposed to throwing it through)

Also, potentially going to 6 foul limit in 2016-17

I think I like, or may like, all of these(listed) changes. I would have also eliminated the 10 seconds to get the ball across mid-court.

Pretty much hate all these changes. The NBA and their fans are ruining all levels of basketball. The game has been ruined by the attempt to let the athletes "just play."

Why eliminated 5 second rule? Why is taking a charge bad? If you want more scoring than stop letting the D hold all the time and call the body contact on shots. There was more scoring back before the restriction arc because you either took a charge or had to contest the shot without hitting bodies. It's idiotic that they keep changing rules without actually fixing the problem.

taking a charge isnt necessarily bad its that the refs havent known how to properly call a charge ever. the bigger restricted area will get guys instead of sliding under guys to get bogus charge calls to actually play some defense.

its not about college basketball vs the nba, its about better basketball period. people made the same comments when the ncaa went to the 45 second shot clock and then to the 35 second shot clock. do we really want to apply those rules to today and see how unwatchable the game gets?

30 seconds wont make the game vastly different but its a step in the right direction, the positive is that it shouldnt take a huge adjustment from teams either. its going to create more possessions and a little uptick in scoring, but none of these rules should hamper a teams halfcourt defense. they definitely should go to 6 fouls next.

What makes the game unwatchable is that it is no longer basketball or a display of skills. It has turned into a rugby scrum. The shot clock issues wouldn't matter, if guys could shoot anymore. Scoring won't go up by shortening the clock, you'll just get more bad shots and even lower shooting percentages.

Taking a charge doesn't mean you don't know how to play D. If anything it shows more defensive skills. Why not take that same logic and apply it to offensive players learning how to not run over defenders and play O properly? Teams scoring 50 points can be far more entertaining than a game in the 100's. A game with no D is just as boring as a game with no O.

Straight up, I wasn't really impressed by the officiating crew we had last year.

I hate to think how they will butcher the new rules this season.

I don't care for the new rules, but they might be an advantage for Frank's defense if we can shoot the ball better than we did last season.

Otherwise, the good teams will get better and the bad teams will get worse. There will be less time for the defenders to rest on the other end of the court and there will be more blow-outs.

UK will just blow out more teams by a larger margin than they did last year and no one other than UK fans will watch the games.

Having said all of the above, Dawn's squad doesn't give a rat's rear-end about the shot clock and look where that got us last season.

Until the big dance hardly anyone watches college ball...The womens game is much better...NBA basketball is fantastic...Just note the TV ratings...No one wants to watch some lugs with 2 left feet tossing the ball around for 30 seconds only to force up a brick in the last few seconds of the clock....The shorter clock will force coaches to spread the floor and let players score the ball....The shot clock should not be long enough for coaches to win a game by milking time...IMHO 28 seconds is perfect for college ball

Did you really state the women's game is better than the men's and then use TV ratings only to compare the NBA (30 teams) to the NCAA Division I (351 teams)?

These criteria are completely different. Women's basketball has lower ratings than men's basketball. Surely this must disprove your statement about women's basketball being better?

Yes i much prefer to watch the womens game....The ball moves, they space the floor and knock down shots...There are a lot of cuts and screens...The men just stand around and wrestle in the paint while some guard dribbles the varnish off the floor until the shot clock winds down...Whats wrong with moving the ball quickly via the pass and knocking down some shots? Its named basketball...Not wrestle and dribble ball

I mean that makes more sense to me than your original post. I was just confused because the tv ratings would be pretty tough to match considering how many fans are spread around the nation cheering for 1 or 2 schools. It breaks it down into a lot smaller fan bases than the NBA's 30 teams. That said, I do think that men's basketball is more interesting than women's. I see plenty of cuts and screens and ball movement. It may have been different from a Gamecock perspective, but I don't think that will last much longer!

Shortening the shot clock will only lead to less ball movement, not more. Look at the NBA, it's isolation plays and high pick and roll plays. If you want less wrestling, fix the way the refs call the game and go back to enforcing the rules.

I don't know how you can say the women's game is better. The women struggle to catch rebounds cleanly, even if they are alone.
