Thumbs up USC-A&M visitor must do's

Cocks,

I am attending the game in a couple of weeks and bringing a bunch of idiot friends with me. I skimmed the boards here a little bit to see if you guys have already answered this question - What do I need to see or do while I am in Columbia from Wednesday to Saturday to get the local flavor?

If ya'll have answered this more than once, please point me to a thread.

Otherwise, the Experience Columbia website listed three bowling alleys in the top 10 attractions so I am not feeling the love from that site.

Anything that does not lead to outright death will be entertained. Stitches, bruises that lead to good stories will be entertained. I also need to eat while I am there.

Looking forward to it, no need to be polite, you would hate me if you knew me.

If you want to know - I have no read on this Aggie team and therefore no idea how this game goes. Won't be surprised either way.

Gig'em

Other food - The Vista
Bars - 25+ The Vista/ 21-25 Five Points
Adventure - The lake or the rivers. You can find boat, board or raft rentals. Charlotte has the Whitewater Center and the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Kershaw has the Carolina Motorsports Park.

Bring money and go to the Vista. Lawyers and guns should not be necessary.

Alright, although I don't like the whole Midnight Yell thin on our statehouse steps, I'll do the best I can for ya.

-For lunch or a late-night drunk meal hit Beazer's. Best subs I've ever had and it's right across from the horseshoe (the most gorgeous piece of property in the state of South Carolina) and the state house--so you can hit it up after your midnight yell shindig. Also try:
a.Pawley's Front Porch in Five Points
b. Going expensive? Mr. Friendly's in Five Points
c. Sushi? SakiTumi
d. Sunday Brunch? Di Prato's on Pickens
e. Cock n' Bull on Rosewood is good too for bar food. But what you really need is our BBQ, so go to either
1. Little Pigs (all you can eat massive buffet on Alpine Rd.)
2. Docs (solid buffet down near the stadium)
3. Palmetto Pig: located in the No-man's land between downtown and the baseball stadium
4. Shealey's: a drive to bastesburg, but for my money, the best vinegar-based pulled pork

Besides eating, I guess the other stuff depends on what you're in to.
-Younger crowd always has fun in Five points, older richer one will be in the vista
-If you get a couple hours during the day, I'd go to the zoo (but I never turn down a good zoo)
-Also, you can park at the zoo and go hang out in the cool, beautiful, and surprisingly rapid Saluda River.
-Besides that, there's some ok golf, but just spend the day appreciating the slow pace and easy beauty of one of the best towns there is.

Honestly though, if you've got that many days to kill, I would run down to Charleston for a day.

Depending what age you are decides which bars you should go to. 5 points is for my college kids and the vista is for 23-older crowd. Tin Roof is always a good bar in the vista to hit up. If you like EDM music Social in the vista is also a good place to go. For places to eat go to Pawleys front porch.

Honestly- There ain't much going on in Columbia outside of the game. There are a few historical attractions (Ainsley-Mills House, State House, etc.). Most people in Columbia just drink heavily for fun. The river is kinda cool. Congaree National Park is right outside of the city- really cool old growth cypress forest. But Charleston is 100 miles away. Unbelievable city to visit. Beaches, awesome history, etc. I'd go there.

Ohhh ya, avoid Beezers at all cost. I refused to eat there while sober in college. When it is 2 am and you are drunk as a skunk, then maybe.

Palmetto Pig BBQ is damn good and it is right near our basketball arena.

Vista is a good place to go drinking. Venture to 5 pts if you wish..

Sheraton Rooftop bar or Whig for a drink before your midnight yell at Statehouse.
If you want a nice dinner, Oak Table, Bourbon, Motor Supply, Hampton St Vineyard are all great options within walking distance of the Statehouse.

Less expensive dinner options downtown: Cantina 76 (mexican), Pawleys Front Porch, The Whig (burgers), Flying Saucer (beer), Village Idiot (pizza), Yesterday's (southern).

BBQ: Southern Belly (sandwiches only, best in town, near stadium), Palmetto Pig (buffet, great fried chicken), Little Pigs (a drive, but great buffet).

Want to party with the college kids on Wednesday night? Five Points... If you're over 30 or feel 30, stick to the Vista and Main St.

Pregame: Get to stadium area no later than 2pm and just wander towards and around the stadium, check out the Cockabooses

Postgame: bar districts mentioned above, take a cab to Platinum Plus if you need a strip club (free admission with ticket stub)

Friday: Get BBQ or greasy lunch. Lots of outdoor activities nearby or just wander campus and enjoy the scenery.

Just my .02

Not sure I agree with that.

Honestly, I feel like Beezers tastes almost exactly the same (their subs) as Jimmy Johns. They just didn't expand like JJ's did. The bread is very similar from what I remember (it's been quite a few years).

Truth, grouchos is an institution but I'll admit its nothing too special.

Surprised no one has mentioned yesterday's or harpers both are good if you're in 5 points.

Late night eats, nothing beats grilled terrayki, I've eaten hibachi all over and for some reason yet to find some where better in terms of price and quality. After 1 this place is a zoo so be warned.

You guys sound the type of guys who would probably enjoy the flying saucer, over 100 beers on tab similar to hooters/tilted kilt/ based in Texas you might be familiar- I worked there one year in college and have to say worst job evvvver.

Beezers is a must eat if you ever have a class at Carolina. I don't know if I would go out of my way to get there as a tourist though.

A couple of hours before game time
hang out around the women's restroom
at Carolina Park/ "the old farmers market"
and watch the parade of garnet and black sundresses

I've never heard of that site you checked out. Tour the State House, SC State Museum, Riverbanks Zoo, Riverfront Park, Art Museum, USC Horseshoe, bars and restaurants in the 3 downtown districts - Five Points, Main Street and the Vista. As for bars, the ones in Five Points cater mostly to students, the Vista and Main Street mostly mid 20's and up. Some of my favorite restaurants: M Vista, M Grille, Saki Tumi, Motor Supply Co. Bistro, Hampton Street Vineyard, Villa Tronco, Bourbon, Garibaldi's, Ristorante Divino, Gourmet Shop in Five Points for lunch, Al Amir, Baan Sawan. I highly recommend the Sheraton Rooftop Bar for a great view of the city.

Absolutely dedicate a day for Charleston if you can, especially if y'all wanna hit a beach. It's 90 minutes to drive down there and well worth it.

I recommend Isle of Palms for a beach trip, but Sullivan's Island and Folly Beach are both pretty good, too. But only spend a couple of hours on the beach because there's a lot to see if you only have one day.

If you're a military buff or have served before you'll appreciate Patriot's Point and that can take up 2-3 hours of your time.

I recommend giving a few hours to downtown to walk around and take it in ... visit the market and the specialty shops. Eat dinner downtown, too, it's hard to go wrong as the town it known for it's food. Speaking of food, I recommend East Bay Deli for lunch, unless you're going to Folly Beach, then brunch or lunch at the Lost Dog Cafe is a must. They have my favorite shrimp and grits and that dish is well paired with their bloody mary.

Also if you're a drinker, the Firefly distillery has some pretty remarkable stuff.

This stuff is all googlable ... and it's just meant to get you started down there. I love that area (I hope I get to live there one day) and so does my wife (in general chicks seem to really dig Charleston).

I don't say this to bash Columbia ... but one of the nice things about Columbia is it's proximity to other nice places. You also have Charlotte a little over an hour away, plus Asheville is about 2 hours away (a very pretty area and I did live there five years). Myrtle Beach is within range, Atlanta's drive-able, so is Savannah.
