Default Ebola Outbreak

http://mic.com/articles/95214/the-de...ampaign=social

It's getting pretty wild on the Dark continent.

Quote:
When Patrick Sawyer started having symptoms, he was on the three-hour flight from the Liberian capitol of Monrovia to Lagos.

After a lengthy bout of vomiting and diarrhea, he turned himself in to Nigerian authorities for quarantine. There’s just one problem: None of the other 100 or so passengers were detained. This means up to 100 people are walking around Lagos as we speak, unwittingly hosting a virus with a 90% fatality rate.

If you read The Hot Zone you know how interestingly terrifying this is.

just glanced at the thread title and thought it said "Ebola outback". Knew the joint had slipped recently but wow!

Anyhow, yes this is some scary stuff. Honestly it scares me more than the Russia/Ukraine Israel/Gaza stuff. Viruses don't discriminate and it simply wouldn't take much...

Glad I'm not in healthcare anymore.

Only a matter of time before it slips the bonds of Africa. We had best not think that it only happens to others and just stick our heads in the sand like we did with AIDS. There needs to be a major international research push to find vaccines and treatments NOW instead of later.

The Hot Zone is a terrific read. As truly scary as anything ever written.

The Ebola virus is about as terrible a way to die as exists. Evil shit for sure.

This is kind of scary.

It's gonna be hard to contain this. All it takes is one traveler getting on an airplane these days.

Heard that there are "several vaccines in the pipeline" for Ebola. Nice to see that a decade or more of viral outbreaks have stirred action now. SMH

There are a number of other hemorrhagic fevers too like Marburg and Lassa. These things will pproliferate with global warming. I expect that within the next few decades we will see a die off of 25% of the global human population.

This makes me more concerned to fly than the actual possibility of aircraft malfunction, disappearance or being shot down. I'm flying to Vegas in late August (Charlotte to ATL, then ATL to Vegas and the same way coming back). Considering ATL is so huge of an airport this really does concern me as people alluded to it just takes one passenger. I fear it's only a matter of time until we hear of the first case in the US. But the problem in Africa is a lot of these areas fear Western medicine, and also engage in improper techniques in dealing with ebola infected individuals as well as their bodies once they have deceased. So even though it's still scary the US would be better able to quarantine anyone with the virus and keep it from spreading like it has in Africa.

With all of the future worries about over-population this sort of thing makes you wonder if it's just natures own system of checks and balances.

While this isn't part of the debate. I do not believe in "global warming"...I do believe in broad spectrum climate shifting, which I believe we are currently experiencing...we add some heat and in turn the natural cycles of this earth compensate. /End tangent.

That said--Marburg and Ebola are two of the worst, Lassa isn't fun but it's pretty common comparatively and with a much lower mortality rate.

Global warming or cooling won't affect Filoviridae propogation positively or negatively, Virus are not as dependent on conditions as bacteria.

Ebola can last outside the body for 24-48 hours in some causes but from 70 C to -70 C it's stable still.

external climate only affects the virus in a secondary fashion---heat increaes sweating which may increase infectivity, admittedly sweat and saliva carry FAR less of the virus than blood....cold means more people are inside, in closer proximity= greater risk of infectivity.

The likelihood of an outbreak like the one in Africa occurring in a developed country is very low.

You can sit next to someone on a plane for hours in a casual way and not contract Ebola.

No need to worry about this one at all.

But Professor Peter Piot said that a "really bad" sense of panic and lack of trust in the authorities in west Africa had contributed to the world's largest-ever outbreak.

The Belgian scientist, now based in Britain, urged officials to test experimental vaccines on people with the virus so that when it inevitably returns, the world is prepared.

Piot co-discovered the Ebola virus as a 27-year-old researcher in 1976.
He is now director of the prestigious London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and was previously executive director of the United Nations' HIV/AIDS programme UNAIDS.

Even if someone carrying Ebola were to fly to Europe, the United States or another part of Africa, "I don't think that will give rise to a major epidemic," he said on Wednesday.

"Spreading in the population here, I'm not that worried about it," he said.
"I wouldn't be worried to sit next to someone with Ebola virus on the Tube as long as they don't vomit on you or something. This is an infection that requires very close contact."

His insights are born of deep experience in the field, highlighted by his impressive CV and the mementos from around the world that dot his office in London."

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worl...dly-virus.html

"CDC Downplays Ebola's Threat to the United States"

"Ebola virus threat to the UK is 'very low'"

"Should you be afraid of the Ebola threat?"

With the established procedures in place in developed countries, and the fact that Ebola is not airborne, there really isn't any need to be too worried. Just avoid non-essential travel to that part of Africa.

But I suppose when you see the size 40 font on cnn.com about western aid workers getting sick, it is easy to get concerned. Watch the VICE segment about the attitude towards Ebola in West Africa, and you will gain a better understanding about why it is spreading and causing issues over there.

It takes multiple decades to develop vaccines. It's just so expensive in a world with so little emphasis on science.

I'm guessing they went with Atlanta because that's where the CDC is located. They also have an isolation unit.

It's easy to write this off and say just leave them over there and hope for the best. But this is an American. Put yourself in their shoes. I would certainly rather be treated over here than over there.
