Default KR Numbers Don't Bode Well

USC's KR game appears to be the weakest of our Special Team units so far.

This includes a positive ECU opening kickoff - when there was confusion on bringing the ball out of the end zone, and then a Texas sized return lane opened up netting a 38 yd return. This was the high point of our return game.

38, 22, 18, 25, 11, 10...return yards from the ECU game on kickoffs. Our regular KR specialist is averaging 19.5 yds/return so far this year after averaging 17.8 yds/return last year.

Ace Sanders, Bruce Ellington showed the ability to take returns to the house.

UGA puts Gurley--their BEST player--back to return kickoffs. Ask Clem5on how much Special Teams can turn the momentum of the game.

Why does Spurrier or ST coach Robinson not put a player back to return kicks that shows the ellusiveness to take KR back the distance? The media doesn't seem to have the stones to bring this issue up with Spurrier.

Starting drives INSIDE the 20 yd line obviously loses the field position game, puts more pressure on the Offense, and basically ties one arm behind our backs when we don't have the ability to bust a huge play on the KR team.

Frustrating...frustrating...can't explain this pretzel logic strategy.

GO COCKS!!

The returner may be part of the problem, but to me, the biggest problem is the lack of blocking. When there was decent blocking on the opening kick the return was good!

I think Spurrier just wants the ball and as long as Carson doesn't fumble, he is ok with starting before the 20 I reckon.

However, we do have higher upside guys on the roster that deserve a shot to make a difference in the kick return game:

David Williams
Chris Lammons
Deebo Samuel

Lammons is the only one of that group that is going to see regular snaps elsewhere. But you can't tell me that David Williams or even Deebo wouldn't add more pop.

He needs to start taking a knee everytime its in the endzone. The 25 ain't bad at all.

Our blocking is really bad on kick returns. If it is in the end zone take a knee and the ball on the 25

I wonder if the coaches promised Carson the KR job in the off-season as a ploy to prevent him from transferring. At this point it's the only justification I can think of for why he's still returning kickoffs

Agree 1000%...you can't tell me that UGA's special teams coaches aren't just short at laughing at our return game film.

Blocking may be 20% of the issue, but I saw huge running lanes on at least 3 returns vs ECU...we took advantage of 1 of them for 38 yds.

Coach Spurrier needs to take accountability and address this issue...81 yard drives don't just happen every time the offense takes the field.

We need to put pressure on UGA's defense...and improve the field position game off of our kick returns.

GO COCKS!!

Hopefully we can reduce the number of times we have to return kickoffs.

Obviously you don't either.

There's this little thing called a call in show EVERY WEEK.

You could always grow a set and call up and ask about it if you're really that worked up over it.

Just sayin'.

But for the record, I'm also thinking it's more of a blocking issue as opposed to a who's back there returning kicks issue.

He's not that fast. Remember him getting ran down by those Florida defenders on that long run last year? That should have been a TD.

C2, it must be this and this issue alone for Spurrier...which is OK if you have an offense that can put up 40+ points a game and just out score opponents (which we may have to do several times this season).

I'll reference this one kickoff that I saw from the stands...went back and watched it...just plain frustrating.

ECU goes up 6-0 w/ 6:34 in the 1st quarter (our 3rd kickoff return so far). We bring the ball out of the end zone in middle of the field. Our blockers set up a 4 man 'wedge' blocking to target ECUs gunners running down our right-side hash mark. After getting great blocks to seal off the middle and another kick-out block by Cody Gibson...our KR specialist turns back into the middle of pile.

I literally could've driven my truck through that space...it was that obvious!

This is just one example of how much we have to improve...or like previously stated...hope for a touchback.

GO COCKS!!

What is strange to me is that of all of our problems this is the easiest area to say, "Why not give someone else a chance."

The blocking is not good, but Shon is not good either.

I think C2 is right. It must be a security issue.

However, returning kickoffs is one of the least difficult skills in the special teams game. Kickoffs are infinitely easier to field compared to punts, and you always have the option of simply letting the ball roll into the end zone and taking it on the 25.

IMO The risk-reward ratio in the KO return game warrants a change in returner.

That's interesting, I didn't realize that going on Spurrier's call in show was a good way to "grow at set" these days. That's amazingly insightful...wow, how ballsy of you to suggest this. Thanks for contributing nothing to this discussion.

Just sayin'.

I simply asked what was Spurrier's thinking and why the media hasn't inquired.

I don't ask questions to the coaches for a living. Leave it to the media. Not my chosen profession.

And if I did talk to Spurrier by phone...or in person...I would ask him. Mostly, I want the KR game to improve...quickly.

GO COCKS!!

That kid is fast. There are other fast players too lol. He did well enough to take it past midfield from a goal line handoff up the gut.
