Default Watching other games

I'm watching some other games and I'm more and more realizing what a clusterf*** our game was last night. From the opening kick we never had a single solitary moment of: alright, let's compose ourselves and get things settled down. Even when we had the ball things were frenetic and out of sorts. It looked like we were trying to score 20 points in one possession.

For that we just have tip our hat to A&M. They were in our heads on both sides of the ball from outset and they managed to dictate every single aspect of the game. We do need better coaching, better discipline, better play, etc, but we absolutely need some mental toughness.

Even things that seemed to be good on the surface could have actually hurt us, like the 2 bomb TDs we had. Yeah, the TDs were great and necessary but it would have been better if we could have gotten there with a methodical drive and given our D a rest, worn on their D a little and kept A&M's offense on the bench. It was still a close game at those points. Of course, later in the game doing anything methodically was out of the question.

So, all that to say, as I watch some other games it's become more apparent to me how we simply were never in (or into) the game at all. Frankly, I think our guys bought all their own hype too much and were stunned that A&M showed up ready to actually play a game. I think they believed A&M would come in and swoon after hearing 2001 and Sandstorm and just be putty in our hands. Now they know that nobody in the nation fears or respects them so hopefully they'll have some pride and want to prove something.

As far as I'm concerned, our season starts next week. If we can regroup and come out next week looking like a team with a clue, then we can move forward from there.

I love Spurrier to death but I notice that he never has enough patience to establish a running game. We hang our defense out to dry but I also noticed that run blocking was not as near as good as I thought it would be. When you play those up tempo offenses you have to keep your offense out grinding as long as possible. Of course it would help if our defense could tackle somebody.

That was a hard one for this game. Even by the 2nd possession, we were basically in a must-score mode. It was obvious by that point that our D was going to offer no resistance to A&M and they would essentially score at will. I think if our initial run plays had picked up chunks of yard we would have seen more of it. But simply weren't in a position to dink around with 2 and 3 yard gains.

Our team did look antsy all game. Shoot, it looked like A&M was the home team.

Young players that get down early when they are the favorite at home are going to get nervous and feel the pressure.

I know we lost some key players, but weren't we the youngest team in the nation last year?

Particularly with a 5th year senior who has had good game experience, I would have hoped for more of a calming, settling presence.
