Default Cockytalk Practice Report: 8/3/08

Practice Number Three: 8/3/08

Much better night all around for the entire team . The guys came out in shells tonight and there was a little bit of popping going on. Jarred Cook was still on crutches tonight, and Melvin Ingram and Ladi Ajiboye are wearing the yellow jerseys and running through agility drills but were not allowed to run plays. Stephon Gilmore was at practice tonight getting a lot of attention from our coaches. Keeping our fingers crossed that we will get a commitment from him soon.

After a round of Field Goal and Punting practice, and after the team went through their normal stretching routine, the Gamecocks broke up into squads to run position drills. Coach Ellis brought the linebackers over in front of where I was standing tonight and ran a very interesting set of drills. The first was run from behind a set of plastic drums they use in other drills to represent linemen. Ellis sat two drums side by side and centered them on about the ten yard line. He spaced two more barrels (one to each side of the center ones, about 5 yards out. Coach Ellis stood behind the two centered barrels as if he were a QB ready to take a snap. The linebackers all lined up single file behind him while one guy stood on the opposite side of the centered barrels (as in a position where a Middle Linebacker would be) the object of this drill was that the first linebacker would represent the Running back who would pump his legs and then run to one side staying inside the barrels spaced out. The Middle linebacker would stay up on his toes and had to follow the side that the Running back moved to and meet them in the gap between the center and outside barrels. Jasper was up once with Shaq Wilson as the Middle Backer, and Jap gave a little head and shoulder fake to this right that Shaq bit on and went for the right gap, Jap ran untouched to the left side gap, and Ellis exploded. He told Shag not to bite on those jukes and to stay on his toes until he saw the back commit one way or other. He explained that if the back broke first, even though he may have a step or two, if the Linebacker takes the correct angle to the gap, he will have a shorter distance to cover, and make up the couple of steps. He said going on those first fakes or jukes are what gives offenses 300 yard ground games !
After a few minutes of this drill, they lined up with three guys parallel to each other in a four point stance. One guy faced the first down guy and when the whistle blew, the guy in the four point stance had to lunge at the up guys legs. The guy in the standing position had to move laterally and push the lunging guy down to keep him off his legs, as the first guy was pushed down, the second guy would lunge at the up man’s legs and so on. . . .
After pushing all three player down, he then had to hit a dummy being held by one of the coaches at the end of the line. Nice drill for maintaining concentration and to keep from being taken off your feet.

While this was going on, the offensive and defensive front lines were working on a drill that I think is long overdue. It was just basic head to head, Offense vs Defense. The coaches blew the whistle and Coach Lawing and Coach Hunt saw who was moving who off the line. Neither side gained a big advantage over the other which to me is a very good thing for the Offensive Line. Last season and for the most part of the Spring, the Defensive Line dominated the O/Line in drills and in game situational plays. There were a couple of times during this drill that the Offensive line actually put more than one of the Defensive players on their cans. I would love for our coaches to put our front lines through this drill every practice for at least 20 minutes. This drill will separate the men from boys real fast.

Shortly after these drills ended, the WRs and the DBs came over to the near field to run through a short round of one on one (with a twist). This time they lined up on the 20 yard line and worked the short field (Red Zone). Chris Smelley and Stephen Garcia both had better nights throwing the football, and even though there was still several passes from both these guys that were way off target, there were some occasional well thrown passes mixed in. Tommy Beecher if anything is getting better with each practice. Tommy hit his first three passes for TDs going to Kenny McKinley to the left corner on the first, and to Joe Hills on a fade for his second, After a couple of reps by both Smelley and Reid McCollum, Tommy threw his third consecutive TD pass this time on a Corner route to the right side, to Jason Barnes. It is very noticeable that Tommy looks off his receivers until the last possible second before releasing the ball. Tommy’s footwork is very good and his mechanics are the best of the three Quarterbacks on the depth chart.

After this coach Rychleski got his turn to run some kick coverage drills. The field was marked off with small orange cones spaced out to form about 6 lanes, about 40 yards long. The drill coach Ray ran was to have a player at one end of the field start running in the 5 yard wide lane, and another player was lined up about halfway in the lane Representing the kick coverage player. This player had to run backwards until the kicking team player got close to him, then the coverage player had to stop and bump the kicking team’s man in the lane. After every one did a few reps of this, coach Ray said, “now, you’ll see why this is important” . The next set of drills was done the same way, except from the opposite end of the lane, and player was sent down the lane carrying the football, representing the ball carrier. He told the player running from the other end, to fight off the block by the guy half way in the lane, and grab the ball carrier, similar to the Oklahoma drill, only with longer lanes. I noticed that coach Spurrier was really into this drill and he was even showing a little emotion by clapping his hands when a player would fight off the block and meet the ball carrier squared up in the lane. But coach Spurrier never got involved more than just as a spectator during this drill. After a loud “Let’s Have A Break” by coach Rychleski, the offense came over once again to run Skel Drills for a while. Once again Tommy started out hot connecting with Joe Hills and Moe Brown on his first two reps. Stephen Garcia missed on his first shot here, but connected on a post route to Freddie Brown on his second attempt. Chris hit his first two reps finding Moe Brown on a slant, and then when nothing else was open, threw to his check down receiver in Patrick DeMarco. All three quarterbacks did some good work here during the rest of this drill. After throwing a couple off the mark, Garcia hit what might have been his best pass of the summer finding CC Whitlock on a deep slant. Whitlock was tightly covered by Jamire Williams, but Garcia threaded the needle and hit the receiver in the small open area near the sideline. Garcia had another completed pass after that, that was more of a spectacular grab by Nick Prochak than a nicely thrown pass, but it was a rifle shot that Nick laid out to grab.

The team ended the evening running the 11-on-11 drills. Beecher had another strong showing here, and had the crowd cheering at one point, hitting Joe Hills on a fade route to the Left sideline. It was thrown high but in a spot where the only person who had a shot at it was Hills. Joe made a very nice catch getting high to pull the ball in. He came down oddly but managed to get the toes in bounds before falling outside the sideline. Tommy followed this up by finding Whitlock on a nice bootleg pass that worked so well for him in the Spring. This one also had the Crowd applauding because this particular play was made with Tommy rolling to his left and hitting Whitlock about 15 yards downfield on a rope!
Garcia found the mark a couple of times on some out routes and checkdowns as did Smelley. The deeper routes that they attempted during this part of the workout were thrown high and long. Garcia had another interception just before the end of practice. He attempted to hit Deon LeCorn on a quick slant, but it was thrown slightly behind him. Deon almost pulled it back in, but Antonio Allen was in position to grab the ball away from LeCorn before he could get the ball around and get control of it.

The entire team had a much more spirited workout tonight, and it almost looked like they were glad to get some pads on and hit some. There was a lot more talking and jawing going on between the players, and the coaches had to keep reminding the players to back off and not tackle just yet, but the guys were ready to play football.
At one point in the Skel Drills, Smelley found Deon LeCorn on a short out route and Rodney Paulk was moving towards Deon while the ball was in the air. He didn’t try to hold up, and smacked into LeCorn just as he caught the ball, knocking him backwards about two yards. Deon threw the ball into Rodney’s facemask and the two got in each other’s face, but separated quickly. They were staring each other down walking back the opposite sides of the ball. . . they didn’t come to blows, but they were close to it. . . . .Yep, It’s going to be a Good Season !!!

Very nice spurt. Glad to see the O-line is looking better than the previous few years. After all they are the key to our success on offense this year.

It was a good night tonight guys. Lots of enthusiasm by the players and lots of nice plays. I liked it alot because Tommy didn't throw the majority of his passes to Kenny McKinley tonight. He spread it around some. I almost got the feeling yesterday night he was leaning on Kenny a little bit. Not that it's a bad thing to do, but I would like to see him get comfortable throwing to the other guys too. . . .he did that tonight and the smile on my face got wider !

Can't wait 'till they go full pads and start hitting for real !

Yep, gonna be a good season !

I know it is just the third practice (without pads) but "WOW-WEE" bring on N.C. State

Yeah that's true. The more threats running down field, the more isolated and vulnerable opposing secondaries become. And if they get use to making grabs in practice they won't be so likely to freak out when they seeing coming on ESPN

Mike Davis looked real good tonight, but without letting the guys tackle, it's hard to really evaluate how good the running game is. Wallace had a couple of carries that looked good. Maddox . . . . Hope he improves before the season starts. Pretty much all I can say there. Maybe when the pads go on next week he'll come around.
