Maybe someone could attest to Alex English or John Roache, but I wasn't around to see them.
I've never been so confident with a ball in a players hands. No knock on Watson or McKie, both great players, but they never played at Michael Jordan levels like DD is. He can absolutely take a game over and I would be willing to have the ball in his hands with the game on the line any game. This isn't even a knee-jerk reaction. It's just amazing to watch opponents continually double team him to little effect. I don't believe in "moral victories," but I've never been so proud to have a player rocking South Carolina on their chest. |

As individual players, I don't think he's as good as those two you listed above. But in the modern era? Yes. It's difficult to ultimately judge because all of those players bring different assets to the table. But I think if I had to ultimately choose who I would want on my team right now at this point, I'd take Downey SLIGHTLY over McKie, who is damn good himself.
And to have Downey even compared to those two is a MAJOR feat itself. No active player in College Basketball right now compares to either of those guys. They are that good. |

Roche is the reason I am a Gamecock Fan!
Downey is amazing........Don't want to compare different eras......just want to enjoy the team!

I agree that you can't say one certain player is better than other greats from the past because the game has changed so much in the past 30-40 years. The major difference being that in the begining until the late 60s there were very few to NO black players on any of the major Div 1-A teams. Then until the early 80s there was no three point line or shot clock in college basketball. There was no Dunking allowed in those days either. The game was all about Fundementals in the early years, and the team that had players that were better at ball handling, defensive footwork, execution of designed plays etc. . . . . . The game then was a lot more mental than it is today. IMO, John Roche is the best all around player this school has ever seen. He was good in all areas of the sport at that time, and was probably in my list of Top 20 best college players ever.
However, there is no denying that Downey is the best I've seen in a Gamecock uniform since the introduction of the modern game. The Shot Clock, the Three point line etc. . . . . I thought Trey Kelly was one hell of a player during his time here, but Downey has taken Kelly's game to a whole other level. No one that I can remember has been able to place a team's play on his shoulders the way Downey can, and just "TAKE OVER". He's can kill you by driving or from long range and anything in between.

He's good, but he still needs work. He still tries to force a lot of plays and shots that aren't there and that results in a turnover or blocked shot, etc... I think he tries to do too much, which is common for the PG.

Im only 38.... and really started watching Carolina basketball from the late 70's on.... So I do not want to discount what players did before I started watching, but Devan Downey is the best player I have seen play at Carolina

Does he come back for his Senior year or does he go pro? I would hate to lose DD and Zam.

John Roche is the greatest to ever play at USC. He could take over any game he played in. Roche did in 3 years, what all these other players did in 4 years and he did it with no 3 point line. If he could have played as a freshman and had the 3 point line, no other USC player could have ever touched his scoring totals.
On a national level, the same goes for Pistol Pete Maravich. He averaged over 40 points a game with no 3 point line. He was an amazing college player. Just so everyone knows... I'm not taking anything away from Devan Downey. He is a great player, but I just think Roche had more of an impact. Call me Old School if you want. |

With Downey's size (5'9"), he won't see the NBA. He will be making his money over in Europe.

Lastnight really opened up a lot of people's eyes outside of the state and the SEC with the performance of DD, and Archie as well as the entire team...I really think 10-6 or 11-5 could happen... |

And this post could not be more accurate. Best ball handler, and best pure shooter ever. Had he been allowed to play as a freshman, and had there been a 3 point line back then, he'd still own every scoring and assist record in college basketball to this day.
